Four more years of Trump: A glimpse into the grim future that could have been
Election season is over. Joe Biden is the President-elect of the United States. Though Biden is set to take office in January, the aftershocks of the Trump administration will loom over the country for years. Based on the last four, here’s how four more years of “Trumpism” could have destroyed the soul of the Nation.
The Trump Administration mainly focused National Security efforts toward Islamic and Left-Wing terrorism; however, the number of domestic terrorist attacks have still increased by an average of 75% per year since the Obama Administration because of one reason: Right-Wing terrorism.
According to the Anti-Defamation League, Right-Wing terrorists are responsible for 79.3% of total domestic terrorist incidents from 2016-2020. With each year of Trump’s Presidency, the number of Right-Wing terrorism incidents per year has steadily increased. Four more years of Trump’s unwillingness to confront and condemn Right-Wing terrorism would allow groups like the Proud Boys, Neo-Nazis, and the KKK to further expand their organizations.
Immigration is a fundamental part of the United States’ belief system. In just four years, Trump has managed to change the American outlook on immigration. In Trump’s America, immigrants from Latin America, Africa, and The Middle East are the enemy.
In 2018, Trump held a meeting with U.S. Senators to discuss the fate of young, undocumented immigrants. Toward the end of the conference, the President made his disdain for immigrants from Africa, El Salvador, and Haiti clear. He asked, “Why couldn’t we just take in immigrants, say, from Norway instead?”
Mexico is Trump’s scapegoat for crime in the United States. He has demonized the word “Mexican” and used it to describe any Latin American immigrants deemed unfavorable in his eyes. In his second year in office, he demanded the border between Mexico and the U.S. be closed. He also has suggested using alligator filled trenches and an electrified border wall to deter Mexicans from entering the U.S.
Muslim immigrants have faced intense violence and intimidation since the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Violence against Muslims occurred at the highest rates since 2001 during Trump’s first campaign and has been perpetuated by Trump’s verbal attacks against the Islamic faith and Arab Americans. When presenting his plans for a Muslim ban, President Trump justified it by comparing it to the infamous World War II Japanese internment camps.
“What I’m doing is no different than FDR,” said President Trump. “I mean, take a look at what FDR did many years ago and he’s one of the most highly respected presidents.” Japanese internment camps are black marks on U.S. history. No president should strive to implement a system that emulates one built on violations of basic human rights.
This coldness toward immigrants from President Trump has created an increased sense of white nationalism that has resulted in anti-immigration policies. The U.S. needs immigrants to continue functioning. Another four years of Trump could deter immigrants from coming to America, which would destroy the very principles that founded the Nation.
Abroad, the Trump Administration has damaged international relations between the U.S. and other countries. The German public has an extremely negative view of Americans under Trump’s Presidency, which is a contrast to the mainly positive view Germany had of the Americans during the Obama Administration.
Trumpism has alienated the U.S. from other countries. Even relations with our closest allies are in jeopardy. Unresolved tensions under the Trump Administration exponentially deteriorate U.S. diplomacy. 65% of citizens within the European Union have unfavorable views on Americans. Ratings of the United States are currently at record lows in some of our closest allied countries, including Canada, Japan, and Australia.
In 2017, the Trump Administration decided to exit the Paris Climate Accord, a United Nations agreement to control global climate change. Trump gave his reasons for pulling out based on questionable statistics that left other world leaders skeptical. Since then, the U.S. has not met the environmental standards laid out by the agreement. Along with declining the expansion of smog emission laws and refusing to implement pollution laws on the coal industry, the Trump Administration has been detrimental to the environment. Another term could cause irreversible damage.
President-elect Joe Biden has promised to reenter the Paris Accord on day one in office. He says he will also loosen restrictions on immigration and cease the building of the Mexican border wall. Biden plans to rebuild weakened relationships with the European Union and implement domestic terrorism prevention policies. Americans and the world deserve a resolution to the issues caused by the Trump Administration. Joe Biden is America’s best chance.
