280-word Character Limit

Every twitter user at one time or another has encountered the problem of crafting the perfect tweet, only to see that it is over Twitter’s 140 character limit. This widespread problem has been evident in tweets for years in the form of missing apostrophes and misspelled words. However, users can rest assured they won’t have this problem again because Twitter has changed its character limit from 140 to 280.

This new feature is available to nearly all 40 of the languages that Twitter offers, except for Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.Twitter originally set their character limit at 140 because they wanted tweets to be able to fit in a text message, which is traditionally 160 characters. 20 characters were allotted for the username, and the remaining 140 were for users to fill with their thoughts and opinions. Twitter tested out their new word limit with a small test group and found that the novelty of tweeting with 280 characters soon wore off, and the majority of the test group’s tweets returned to 140 characters or less.

In the wake of this monumental update, some people feel that Twitter should be focusing on some of the controversial content that is written on their platform, instead of the number of characters allowed in a tweet. The company has been criticized for mishandling the everyday harassment that appears on Twitter, and allowing illegal propaganda that may have illegally influenced the 2016 election. For these reasons, as well as the company’s lack of major innovation recently, the Twitter user count has been stalled at around 330 million users for the last few years. However this new update could drive new traffic to Twitter, and encourage its users to share their thoughts in even more detail.
