GHS french teacher wins regional superintendent award
May 1st marked the 40th anniversary of the Kane County Educator of the Year ceremony. Out of 8,289 county staff members, Martha Behlow, who is a GHS French teacher, was nominated to receive awards, along with 18 others. All 19 educators were given a distinguished educator award preceding a brief description and video of each staff member. After each teacher received their plaque, more socializing and a three course dinner took place before the more prestigious awards were distributed.
The first honor, the Regional Superintendent Award, was bestowed upon our very own Madame Behlow. After a quick correction to a wardrobe malfunction, Behlow made her way to the stage to give her grateful acceptance speech. Although she did not receive the main educator of the year award, which gives $3,000 to the teacher’s school, she said that if she had she would have “…liked to see it go to the Geneva Academic Foundation because they have done so much for the French program [at GHS].” Also, if she had not been nominated at all, she would have like to see Mrs. Swidenbank, her classroom neighbor, take her place. She is the fourth Geneva High School teacher in four years to be nominated for the Educator of the Year award.
Although she did not walk away with the top award and cash prize, Madame Behlow can rest assured that she has brought a great deal of pride to GHS. This school is filled with amazing teachers. It is always a wonderful thing when one of them is recognized for their successes. Madame Behlow is an innovative and creative educator, and the staff of Voyager would like to congratulate her on her well-earned achievements. There are surely many more to come.
