Christmas carols at the Art Institute
As the most wonderful time of the year approaches, our Varsity choir will be spreading Christmas cheer in the city! On Friday, December 12 we will be putting on a holiday performance in the great hall of the Art Institute of Chicago. We have been singing here almost every year and are very honored to be invited back! We couldn’t believe we were given this opportunity as high school students. To get more information on this great event we’ve gone and interviewed none other than our talented choir director Mrs. Curtis for some more info on this year’s concert.
Q: How long has the choir been preparing for this performance?
A: We start in October, because we are also preparing for the winter concert and have limited rehearsal time.
Q: What are some songs that the choir will be singing?
A: We will be singing traditional Christmas carols A Capella, meaning without instruments, as well as a Varsity choir favorite called Star in the East.
Q: What is the song you are most looking forward to?
A: The First Noel.
Q: Who comes to these performances? Have there been any unexpected appearances?
A: Parents usually come as well as visitors at the museum. There has been a couple from Pennsylvania who has come to Chicago for many years in a row and makes sure to stop and hear us sing. Sting was also performing at the United Center and came to listen…and said he was impressed!!! ☺
Q: How many other choirs get to sing at the Art Institute?
A: There are five choirs in total – one for each weekday.
Q: When and where can you hear us sing?
A: Our winter concert is on December 11th at 7:30 in the auditorium. If you want to hear us at the Art Institute from years past, search us up on YouTube! Also, auditions for the spring musical Peter Pan are after Thanksgiving break on December 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, so if you’re interested try out or at least come and see.
There will be a small group of students singing carols at the Write Club event at Barnes and Noble on Friday, November 21. Make sure to arrive at 5:45 to hear us because we are performing before the event begins!
Although the performance is a field trip during the school day, they would appreciate anyone interested and looking for something to do to come to the winter concert! Varsity is singing some of the same songs and Concert and Treble will be performing as well. We promise you will enjoy the show!
Happy holidays!
