One on one with UNICEF
UNICEF Club president, Grace Keegan, gave us the scoop on what the volunteer- based club is all about.
Q: What is club all about?
A: “The UNICEF Club at Geneva High School is a volunteer club that fund raises, educates, and advocates for UNICEF. UNICEF helps the world’s most needy children in over 190 countries to get water, adequate nutrition, immunizations, protection, education, and disaster relief. As a club we discuss ways to benefit these causes and hold events that support UNICEF’s efforts to end child poverty around the world.”
Q: What does UNICEF stand for?
A: “United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund.”
Q: When and where does this club meet?
A: “We meet in room J250 about once a month and usually during PLC. This varies depending on the project we are working on so anyone interested should pay attention to announcements to get information about upcoming meetings.”
Q: What fundraisers does the club get involved in?
A:”We volunteer at a variety of events and fundraisers that are planned and organized by our members. Past activities include making and selling origami holiday stars, hosting a bake sale, participating in UNICEF’s worldwide campaign for water, organizing a benefit night at Panera, volunteering at donation tables, and selling raffle tickets for UNICEF.”
Q: What was the most successful fundraiser from last year?
A: “Our most successful fundraiser was the Geneva restaurant gift card raffle we held during the homecoming football game. We raised enough money to build a water pump that serves an entire village in a third world country. However, every fundraiser has been a success and every penny counts!”
Q: Who can get involved in this club?
A: “Anyone who has a passion for improving our world is welcome to join at anytime!”
