Lit Mag looks to repeat success
Out of 417 high school literary magazines in Illinois, Geneva’s 2014 “Skaldic” magazine is ranked #1. The staff also share this rank with Dekalb high school’s “New Pennies” lit mag. The “Skaldic” has been up and running since the first day of school, working hard to ensure they repeat last year’s superior ranking. Throughout the year, finding work was difficult for the staff since they were lacking the influx of submissions that make the magazine what it is. More entries of art, writings, and music were needed to begin visualizing the layout of the magazine.
A big part of the magazine, other than submissions, is the design of the magazine. The colors, font, arrangement and matching art with literature is vital for the judge’s perception of the magazine. Another important part is the intro and conclusion. After second semester came around, the submissions began flooding in. The submissions were chose off of their quality, as well as their relevance to the year’s theme. This year, the theme is introspection: the act of looking within. That follows last year’s theme of ergo. After the submissions are organized, they integrate them into the design of the magazine. Art and writing is also paired when they share styles and aspects of the theme. The date of print has approached quickly, and the magazine will be sent in tomorrow, April 8th. The staff of “Skaldic” will be relieved to have gotten the magazine on its way.
