The Arden Angels

The Arden Angels club, sponsored my Mary Keyzer and Emma Cole, is a club that most people at GHS have never heard of. Made up of a small group of ten to twelve students, the group is the perfect size for what their club is all about.

For those of you not familiar with the club, Arden Angels is a group of students lead by Mrs. Keyzer and Mrs. Cole. They are a volunteer group who frequents Arden Court, a home for adults suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. The disease is one that causes a deterioration of the mind, and is most commonly associated with memory loss and the inability to function mentally, to the point where they lose the ability to create new memories.

Mrs. Keyzer and Mrs. Cole love their weekly visits to Arden Court and making friends with the patients there. On their different visits, they play games, tell stories, do crafts, and celebrate the holidays, like making valentines on Valentine’s Day, and singing carols around Christmas. Over the weeks, the group has grown to love the patients living at Arden Court. Through the games and crafts, they have grown close to the patients. “Surprisingly enough, they remember you,” Mrs. Keyzer said during an interview on the subject.

For the members of Arden Angels, this one hour a week is a simply sacrifice of time, but for the Alzheimer’s patients living at Arden Court, the weekly visits may be the thing that brightens their week. And what could be better than seeing their smiling faces?
