Are Clear Toasters a Needed Commodity?
We’ve all been there. Waiting for our bread to finish toasting only to find it burnt to a crisp. Unfortunately, this happens far too often than we need it to. I have worked in the restaurant industry for more than a year now, and this has been a problem in which I have noticed frequently. The cooks at the diner cannot manage the toaster while working at the grill. Sometimes, the bread comes out burnt, and it ends up getting thrown away and wasted. With dozens of loaves of bread being purchased every weekend, I cannot help but notice tens of slices being thrown out, and this is excluding the heels! You may be wondering, why not change the settings on the toaster? In fact, many of the toasters in the restaurant industry only have a default heating setting. On top of this, the cooks use the toasters for all kinds of breads that have different textures and thickness to them. This is why transparent toasters need to make their way into households and restaurants.
Luckily, progress has already been made on this type of innovated toaster. The Telegraph has stated that engineers have perfected a model in which they have been working on for 15 years named the Magimix Vision Toaster. Unfortunately, it seems that the price for this type of toaster will not be cheap, and many restaurants will not want to fund something that seems like such a miniscule problem, so what can I do?
The call to action that I want to make is an implementation of a type of toaster that has clear sides to make sure that bread does not get burnt. I find it shocking that this type of innovation isn’t more apparent in households and restaurants. Along with this, a suitable material must be used on the sides to keep transparency, so it cannot melt. Arnie Cooper, from the MIT Technology Review, suggests that the material be made with palladium, an element with a very high melting point. This element has been used for glass-like substances for about 45 years now. I’m hoping my voice will be heard, and local restaurants can realize the importance of this topic. This will benefit these places in the long run because less bread will end up wasted in the trash because of a far too common mistake of letting bread toast for too long.
