Highlight on a local band: the Flesh Panthers

Similar to how some bands have begun (for example, the Ramones) the Flesh Panthers weren’t exactly taken seriously with their quick, choppy, average-of-two-minute songs. However that doesn’t mean they were not well liked from the start. They’re wild, blistering and just crazy at times. Somehow they happen to easily catch your attention and make you interested.

Often times lacking self-restraint (overall sobriety) especially while getting into gear before shows, they are becoming used to it and preform quite well. Originally, they began posting tracks onto bandcamp.com. They became well liked and received some great feedback. Now, the Flesh Panthers have an abundance of shows booked in the mid-west area. One of them being in their wonderful hometown, as well as the reason I’m writing this, Chicago. It will take place the eve of Halloween and they also preform that night with Twin Peaks who played at Pitchfork Fest this summer.

All in all they’re a bit of a mess, in the most flattering way possible. Reglarwiglar.com calls them “pubescent ne’er-do-wells smoking loosies under the bleachers” which is an excellent way of describing their atmosphere. They happen to be an incredibly interesting and new, local band to for sure check out!

I had the chance to do a very brief online q&a with them down below.
Q: How/when did you guys meet and eventually form a band?
A:We all met in high school going to punk rock shows! We have been in different bands through the years joining up with who ever needed a drummer or a bass player or whatever. Some how this line up formed and we just sort of clicked.

Q:How was your first performance?
A:Our first performance was at the Beat Kitchen. We covered “Love Fool” by the Cardigans. It was legendary!

Q:What’s the best part about being in a band?
A:The best part if being a band is being able to totally freak out in a room full of people and have them enjoy / pay to see it. I freaked out and went crazy in the lunch room the first day of sixth grade and everyone thought I was so weird. I made no new friends that year.

Q:What’re your plans for the future of the Flesh Panthers?
A:We’re finishing up our debut album. Hopefully some record label fat cats want to put it out and make us the next nirvana.
